1 to 1 Counselling

Specialist trauma focussed 1:1 counselling for female and male survivors (18+) who have suffered rape, sexual abuse or sexual exploitation at any time in their lives. This service is available to anyone living in, or registered with a GP in Wiltshire. Counselling services are delivered in Trowbridge and Chippenham and are free of charge. Women only space is available at designated times.

What can I expect in a counselling session?

Counselling provides a safe, non-judgemental and supportive space in which you have time to reflect and explore the impact the rape, sexual abuse/exploitation has had on your life in order to help you to cope and recover. If you are seeking counselling prior to court proceedings for what has happened to you we can offer you Pre-Trial Therapy. We can explain more about this to you at our first meeting. Initially we offer up to 12 sessions. Some people may require fewer and some more. You will work with your counsellor to agree the total number of sessions that are right for you, up to a maximum of 24. Counselling is a process that requires a time commitment from you. Sessions are 60 minutes in duration and you would meet with the same counsellor at the same time and location each week. A waiting list is in operation and waiting times will be influenced by the amount of availability you can offer.

Our counsellors hold a minimum qualification of a diploma in counselling, or are in their final year of training. They are committed to Continued Professional Development and meet regularly with a supervisor to ensure they are working in a safe, ethical and effective way. All counsellors work within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s (BACP) Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.

Confidentiality

We offer the highest level of confidentiality consistent with the law and the BACP Ethical Framework. Your counsellor will not share the content of your sessions with anyone else such as your GP, Social Worker or any member of your family. However, they are obliged to seek professional support from their supervisor. They may also need to seek professional support and advice from the Centre Director, particularly where they may be concerned about your welfare, or the welfare of a child or vulnerable adult you have told them about. We recognise that you may choose to forego your own confidentiality if you believe it is in your best interests to do so. We strive to protect your anonymity so that you can approach the service more confidently. For this reason we do not make the location of our premises public knowledge.
